Last year we had a couple's Valentine's Day at a new pub that opened up with some friends from church. We chipped in together for a baby-sitter for our kids and had a great time for 3-4 hours.

The dinner part was fairly expensive (plus drinks) but we got by with a bit less with the babysitting than we would have by ourselves.

Anyway, what tricks do you have for a good Valentine's Day on a budget?

My favorite idea would be not to celebrate it, but hubby would not allow me to do that. He insists that we take part. I've taken to making cool online greeting cards with Smilebox, which he likes. They are free, unless you want to upgrade, which I have not.

I frequently say that I can't cook and that's not exactly true. I do not like to cook. AT ALL. So I will also surprise him with a dinner at home. Made by me for a change. And it will be something other than my most famous dish, the bowl of cereal.

Third, we live in the wedding capital of the US. We also work in a profession where we know some judges. Earlier this year, I had a ring re-set that was made from diamond rings that I inherited from my grandmother. I have been wearing it as a wedding band. (What could be better than a ring of someone that I loved dearly whose marriage lasted almost 60 years?) Hubby was briefly bothered that I was not wearing "my wedding band." I reminded him that his original wedding band was in the ocean in Hawaii from the third day of our honeymoon. But I understood his point and we may try to get one of the judges we are fond of to renew our vows, using the new ring. Hopefully, Brian's children can be present, since they were our Best Man and Maid of Honor before. They are 5 and 7 now, so hopefully it won't seem quite so boring.

So those are my plans on a budget. For 12/12, that is. On 12/14, I am going to the bridal shower luncheon of a dear friend. I'll probably send a second Smilebox card.

My "famous" dishes are rice and beans, macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti with meat sauce. But that's where my cooking prowess ends. – mbhunter Feb 9 at 8:08
I would be a very happy girl with mac and cheese. There is only so much fish and whole wheat pasta a girl should eat. – Frugallawyer Feb 9 at 15:29

I know people overspend on Valentine's Day-like that shows someone they REAAAAALY love them.

So I wrote a Poem, check it out here!
