My wife and I were reviewing our monthly expenses, and she asked me about our MCI charge ($10/month).

At one point I recall switching from AT&T to MCI. I had wanted to just ditch long distance altogether since we had been using calling cards at the time (this was a while back) but I had to switch to someone else. I couldn't just go without a long distance carrier.

Is this still a requirement? I'm not quite ready to ditch the land line, but do I need a long-distance carrier as long as I maintain a land line? We use our cell phones for long distance calls anyway.

One Answer:

Check into Ooma and see if it meets your needs. A friend has it, and it has paid for itself in less than a year. If you are only paying 10 bucks a month, it will take longer to get your money back, but worth checking on.

Unlike skype, you continue to use your own phones.

I'd never heard of such a beast. Very interesting, My monthly local bill is more than $10. Mainly my question was whether I can get rid of the LD charge that I never use. Although I suppose I could call up the phone company and ask them. It has been years. :)

I have been considering it, but because of Emergency call I have every other night, have been hesitant to make any changes away from old fashioned ma-bell. Please let us know if you buy it.
