Gift cards were first mentioned in 1916. However gift cards with a magnetic stripe as we know them today were first introduced by Mobil Oil in 1995. (According to Wikipedia)

However, I recall many years ago while in either Williamsburg or possibly Harpers Ferry seeing a gift certificate for a local store.
